SWORDSMITH
Responsible for forging the blade, the foundation of the Japanese sword.
Heating steel to extreme temperatures and hammering it repeatedly, the swordsmith creates a blade that is resilient, unbending, and keenly sharp—embodying both raw power and exquisite beauty.

HABAKI MAKER
Crafts the Habaki, the crucial metallic collar that secures the blade.
Fitted at the base of the sword, it requires micron-level precision to ensure the blade rests securely in the scabbard without rattling, while allowing a seamless draw.

SCABBARD MAKER
Carves the scabbard (Saya) and the wooden base of the hilt (Tsuka) from Japanese magnolia (Hounoki).
To perfectly fit the unique curvature and form of each blade, the wood is hand-carved with sub-millimeter accuracy, creating a tailored sanctuary to protect the sword.

HANDLE WRAPPER
Applies ray skin (Samegawa) to the hilt and skillfully wraps it with traditional cords to harmonize utility with aesthetic refinement. This process ensures an unwavering grip for functionality while elevating the overall durability and prestige of the sword.

LACQUERER
Applies layers of natural lacquer (Urushi) onto the hand-carved wooden scabbard.
This coats the scabbard in a protective barrier against moisture and impact, while bestowing an artistic luster and magnificent finish to the exterior.

No, they are not predetermined. You may choose from a vast diverse range of traditional crafts and premium materials from across all of Japan.

At Suigenkyo, we collaborate with Japan’s top-tier artisans specializing in a wide array of disciplines, including swordsmithing, traditional bamboo bowmaking, lacquerware, ceramics, and exquisite woodworking. Is it possible to receive only a quotation before placing a formal order?
