Norihiro Miyairi | Master Swordsmith
Profile
Born into the prestigious Miyairi lineage of Japanese swordsmithing, Norihiro Miyairi is a visionary master who transcended traditional boundaries to perfect two distinct forging techniques. Once regarded as an innovator challenging convention, his sublime artistry achieved historic recognition.
At just 39 years old, he became the youngest swordsmith in history to receive the coveted Mukansa (Exempt from Inspection) title—the highest rank granting the privilege to exhibit without screening. In 2010, he also claimed the Masamune Prize, the absolute pinnacle of recognition in the sword world, held by only two living masters in Japan.
His illustrious career includes crafting sacred amulet swords for the Imperial Takamado family and the ceremonial grand tachi for Yokozuna Asashoryu. Today, Master Miyairi continues to push the limits of modern bladesmithing, fusing his extensive research into National Treasure restoration to craft contemporary masterpieces of the absolute highest caliber.

Kanjuro Shibata | Master Bowyer
Profile
Established in 1534—the very year of Oda Nobunaga’s birth—and passed down through a single, sacred lineage for 21 generations, “Shibata Kanjuro Bow Shop” stands as Kyoto’s sole purveyor of traditional bamboo bows (takeyumi), boasting an unparalleled heritage. It is said that even the legendary warlord Nobunaga himself deeply favored bows crafted by this historic house.
Today, the 21st-generation grandmaster, alongside his son, continues to preserve their highly guarded secrets. From the supreme gijo bows utilized in the most solemn rituals of the Japanese Imperial Court, shrines, and temples, to the refined bows that support modern Kyudo practitioners, each piece is meticulously and painstakingly handcrafted. Because every step of the creation process demands absolute precision by hand, production is strictly limited to only about 25 bows per month.
The breathtakingly beautiful curves, imbued with over 450 years of historic reverence and the very soul of the artisan, possess a timeless value meant to be cherished for a lifetime.
