This special video follows the entire process—from creation to flight—of the “Drone Buddha” featuring 26 Buddhist statues soaring through the sky on drones. These sacred statues were brought to life by a team of highly talented master artisans, including members of Tsuchimikado Bussho:
Originating in India around the 1st century, Buddhist statues have shaped people’s prayers and aesthetic sensibilities in Japan for over 1,500 years.
Through this project, we have brought Raigo-zu—the traditional imagery of Amida Buddha descending on a cloud accompanied by bodhisattvas to welcome believers—into the modern era using cutting-edge technology. Starting with a hand-carved statue, the form was 3D-scanned and printed with a 3D printer to make it light enough for flight. Traditional Japanese lacquer and gold leaf were then meticulously applied by hand before integrating the pieces with drones to recreate the sacred Raigo scene in mid-air.
Even as the medium of expression evolves with the times, the compassionate heart and prayers for peace embedded within these statues remain unchanged. We hope that younger generations and those encountering Buddhist culture for the first time can experience the profound depth and exciting possibilities of traditional craftsmanship.
