The Hidden World of “Saya-nuri” and the Wisdom of Our Ancestors

On the official Suigenkyo YouTube channel, we have released a new video closely following the lacquering process of a Japanese sword scabbard (saya).
In conjunction with this release, we would like to introduce you to the profound world of traditional Japanese scabbard lacquering.

While many people may imagine black when thinking of a Japanese sword scabbard, various colors began to be applied during the Edo period once the era of wars ended. Even so, black and vermilion remain overwhelmingly popular.

Surprisingly, a sword is not always kept inside its beautifully lacquered scabbard (koshirae).
Because the lacquer can cause the blade to rust, the sword is only placed in the lacquered scabbard when it is brought out in public.
For everyday storage, the traditional custom is to keep the sword in an unpainted, plain wood scabbard called a shirasaya.

It takes 10 to 20 long years to master these traditional techniques and elevate them into a true form of expression.
Traditional crafts are sometimes perceived as outdated, but Japanese artisans continue to breathe life into each and every piece today, all while preserving traditional forms.
